Fasting (Saum)
Fasting as an act of worship has been observed by the faithful of all nations for centuries. Fasting refers to restraining from certain bodily needs for a prescribed period of the day with an intention to please Allah سبحانه وتعالى. In its current form, fasting (Saum) was made obligatory for each adult Muslim in 2nd year of Hirjah. The fasting is observed daily for the whole month of Ramadan (the 9th month of Hijrah calendar). The month of Ramadan also carried special importance because The Holy Quran was also revealed in one of the nights (The Night of Qadr) of this month. The faithful Muslims spend their days fasting and part of their night standing in prayers and listening to the recitation of The Holy Quran. In fact, the month of Ramadan is celebrated as a season of earning rewards and pleasure of Allah سبحانه وتعالى in all Muslim communities. Acts of charity are also intensified in this month. At the conclusion of the month of fasting, all Muslims celebrate the day of Eid-ul-Fitr.
