Sabr (Patience)

To obey Allah’s commandments no matter how unpleasant these are to your body & mind; and to abstain from acts of His disobedience no matter how pleasant and tasteful these are to your body & mind.

Allah سبحانه وتعالى has designed the life in this world to test the performance of human beings. There is a constant state of test whereby obeying Allah’s commandments has been made to look difficult and acts of disobedience have been made attractive. In addition, periodically during the life, one is put through situations that test the perseverance (Sabr) of an individual. Those who pass these tests gain their value as the favored ones in the eyes of Allah سبحانه وتعالى; and for them He has promised high rewards in the life hereafter.

Sabr (steadfastness, perseverance) can be exhibited in the following situations:
  • To bear the difficulties faced in the path of Allah سبحانه وتعالى posed by non-muslims because of one’s faith in Islam
  • To sacrifice one’s wishes, conforms, social life, family traditions etc. in order to fulfill Allah’s commands and to avoid His disobedience.
  • One form of Sabr is that you refrain from taking revenge from another individual despite the right and power to do so; extend your forgiveness and expect your reward from Allah سبحانه وتعالى ( the best possible reward).

Sabr (steadfastness) can be expressed
  • by words,
  • by actions & attitude,
  • by contentment of heart on the prevailing situation.
