Rights & Obligations

Foundations of a Just Civil System

While the first obligation of a Muslim is to believe in Allah سبحانه وتعالى and worship Him alone, it is also imperative for him to safeguard the rights of fellow human beings. The whole Islamic society is, in fact, built upon principles of kindness, fairness, sacrifice and brotherhood. There are prescribed rights and obligations for each individual in the society and if these principles are followed in letter and spirit, a coherent and peaceful environment is created. Observing these rights and obligation is not only beneficial for building up of a good society, it also attracts great rewards for the hereafter. On the contrary, neglecting the rights of others in the society results in destruction of the rewards of all other acts of worship. The best practice for each individual is to fulfil his/her obligations to others in the society and in this way, everyone’s rights will be safeguarded. People who need our best attention are our parents, women, children, the orphans, the destitute and the displaced people. Some references from The Holy Quran have been given in the following sections to highlight the importance of the rights and obligations in a society. The readers are encouraged to get a detailed knowledge of this subject by reading authenticated books. Individual matters and complicated issues should be referred to a qualified Islamic scholar who can advise you about your rights and obligations in your given situation.
